Horton Selected As 2018 Summer Intern

Emily Horton has been selected as the 2018 Livestock Publications Council (LPC) summer intern for Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU). Emily is a senior in agricultural communications at Oklahoma State University and will graduate in December 2018. Horton began her internship duties on June 4 at the BBU office in Boerne.

 

Emily’s family has owned and operated a cow-calf operation for more than 120 years in Hardeman County, Texas on the historic Bar A Ranch. For more than 40 of those years, Emily’s family has raised Beefmaster cattle and she is incredibly passionate about the breed. She is also a very talented writer, photographer and enjoys public relations and event management.

 

This summer she will work with the BBU communications team, helping to plan and coordinate the production of the fall issue of The Beefmaster Pay Weight, as well as assist in capturing content for use in marketing pieces. She will help coordinate and cover the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association National Show and Convention, as well as manage social media platforms and web presence. In addition, she will write articles for The Beefmaster Cowman magazine, the BBU e-newsletter and blog.

 

“We had numerous strong applicants for this year’s internship program, and it was a difficult decision, but Emily rose to the top,” says Jeralyn Novak, BBU Communications Coordinator. “This LPC program is a great opportunity for young communicators to explore the field of agriculture communications, as well as allowing organizations to employ a fresh, youthful perspective.”

 

BBU was selected to host the Livestock Publications Council internship program and thanks LPC for the opportunity.

Beefmaster Breeder Watt (Palo) Matthews Casey Passes Away

Watt (Palo) Matthews Casey, age 97 of Albany, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 1st at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church in Albany with Rev. Anthony Ceder officiating. Interment will follow in the Lambshead Ranch Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 28th at Morehart Mortuary of Albany.

 

Watt Matthews Casey was born on August 11, 1920 in San Antonio, Texas. He was the third child of Liston Agnew (Pat) Casey and Ethel Matthews Casey both of whom where natives of Albany, Texas.

 

Watt attended schools in San Antonio, Houston, Austin and graduated from Albany High School with the class of 1938. He attended the University of Texas in Austin, Hardin Simmons University, and graduated from The College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in September 1943.

 

He served in the Army Veterinary Corps, and then in the parachute infantry until after World War II ended.

 

Watt practiced veterinary medicine full time less than one year, most of his life he was a cowboy and a rancher. He was a breeder of Beefmaster Cattle. He ranched at Albany and Laredo, Texas, and Kiowa, Colorado, with most of the time at Albany.

 

On June 11, 1949, Watt and Dosia Smith of Springfield, Massachusetts were married. They were blessed with four children, Watt, Jr., Susan (married to Michael Williams), Rodney (married to Jennifer) and David.

 

Watt was a member of the Presbyterian denomination for many years, and the Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church since moving back to Albany with his family from Colorado in 1964.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Sallie Joe, who died during childhood, and Mary, who, with her husband Tom Lasater, had six children.

 

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dosia Casey, his children and their spouses, five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and many relatives.

Beefmaster Bulls Included in Integrity Beef Alliance Program

Boerne, Texas – Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) is excited to announce a new partnership with the Integrity Beef Alliance. In December 2017 Beefmaster bulls became the most recent bull breed approved by the Integrity Beef’s board of directors for inclusion in the program. Beefmaster bulls are the newest addition to the program and join the already approved bull breeds of Angus, Charolais, Hereford and Red Angus.

 

“This past year has been an excellent year of growth for the Integrity Beef Alliance, both in participation numbers, but also marketing opportunities for members,” says Executive Director of Integrity Beef Dr. Robert Wells. “Additionally, Alliance leadership has taken numerous steps to further guarantee the future success of the program. Some of the changes that have been made are inclusion of more approved bull breeds.”

 

Established in 2000 by the Noble Research Institute (formerly the Noble Foundation), Integrity Beef is the culmination of best management practices developed by Noble’s agricultural consultants and recommended to producers who participate in the organization’s no-cost consultation program. Integrity Beef is a comprehensive beef production system that produces the highest quality calves possible for the next supply chain owner and the consumer, while improving returns for ranchers through value added traits.

 

Integrity Beef emphasizes progressive management methods, ranch stewardship and humane care of all livestock. Integrity Beef includes a terminal production system that uses a value added, preconditioning program. Through uniform and elevated standard management practices, Integrity Beef producers’ cattle far surpass industry standards for performance, quality, health and behavior.

 

Beefmasters are a strong compliment to the well thought out Integrity Beef program. Adding value and increasing efficiency at every turn is what Integrity Beef strives for and Beefmasters will help in those regards.

If you are a Beefmaster breeder interested in participating in the Integrity Beef Program the requirements for inclusion are as follows: for the terminal program, bulls must be in the top 20% of the breed for weaning weight (WW) and yearling weight (YW) at time of purchase by the member owner. For the replacement female program, the bull the replacement is bred to for the first calf must be in the top 20% of the breed for calving ease direct (CED), WW and YW. Beefmaster Announces Changes to its Organizational Leadership Team

Boerne, Texas – The Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) Board of Directors held a meeting on Jan., 4 in San Antonio Texas. During the meeting the board approved a restructure to the organizational leadership within BBU. The restructure appointed Collin Osbourn as the Executive Vice President and Bill Pendergrass as the Vice President of Marketing and Research.

 

“These changes in staff leadership come after several months of discussion among the board members and staff. Unfortunately, Bill Pendergrass suffered a stroke in August 2017 and this limited his ability to serve in full capacity in his previous role as Executive Vice President,” says BBU President Steve Carpenter. “Bill expressed his concern of not meeting the demands of the job and prompted the need for restructure within BBU leadership.”

 

Lance Bauer was also assigned by the Executive Vice President to serve as the Director of Breed Improvement and Western Field Representative. All other organizational staff members will remain in their current leadership roles. The communications and international teams will be housed under the Marketing and Research department, reporting to Bill Pendergrass. The field representative team will be housed under the Breed Improvement department, reporting to Lance Bauer. The DNA and registration team will report to Office Manager Donna Henderson. The Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association and membership teams will report directly to Collin Osbourn.

 

“This restructure has created a team that is going to be better for the membership and will push the association to the next level,” says Carpenter. “Staff, BBU members, directors and officers are all essential to this team. Each person is important to the success of the breed and we need to pull together to move forward. Team Beefmaster is an unstoppable force and Beefmasters will become the American breed of choice.”
